Inverclyde Care and Repair was established in May 2000 and is one of 37 Care and Repair projects in Scotland, and we provide free, confidential and practical advice and project management services to disabled homeowners and private tenants who are over 60 years of age. The care and repair service aims to help this sector of society maintain their independence and live comfortably and safely in their own homes within their community.

The Scottish Government is committed to improving the quality of private housing in Scotland. This reflects the evidence that there are substantial condition issues in the private sector, and improving the poor condition of private housing is now recognised as having important links to better health and increased opportunities to remain living independently within the community.

Inverclyde Care and Repair contributes to the Scottish Government’s views by helping to make people’s homes suitable for their needs. In particular, we support older and disabled clients by working closely with Inverclyde Council and the local Community Health Care Partnership to achieve their health, social care and housing objectives in addition to enhancing social justice for older and disabled people.

Our core service is to provide advice and information, and to facilitate repairs and improvements to homes in the private sector. In addition, we manage referrals from Inverclyde Council for Independent Living for major adaptations for clients who have been assessed as requiring wet floor and level access shower areas, access ramps, stairlifts and through floor lifts.

An important area of our advice service relates to ensuring that older and disabled people know about the services that are available and how they can access them. Although many of our clients receive practical assistance and advice, we believe that it is imperative that client’s awareness of available services can be increased through us directing them to appropriate organisations that are able to provide advice on a number of housing and support issues.

Inverclyde Care and Repair also operate a small repairs service, which is delivered by two full time officers, and aims to provide older and disabled people with practical help and advice in undertaking small repairs around their home. Since Inverclyde Care & Repair was established in May 2000, we have grown steadily into a vital resource for older and disabled home owners and private tenants.

With the older population predicted to increase significantly, we continue to review, adapt and develop services which meet the needs of older and disabled people within Inverclyde.
